IMAGE INGREDIENTS - a recipe to create great images

IMAGE INGREDIENTS - a recipe for creating great images

As mentioned previously there needs to be a mix of certain conditions to create a more-than-pleasing photographic image. So worth repeating....
The main ingredients for making a great photographic image (and I mean ‘making’ an image and not just ‘taking’ an image) are...
1. Light – good exposure
2. Focus
3. Composition - Content

1. Correct camera settings – either chosen by you or set on ‘Auto’ – to give the best exposure is an absolute accepted requirement. Controlling the light to give this best exposure is I believe a part of this “light ingredient”. How you use the ambient light and how it plays on the subject in terms of direction and angle is also crucially important to set your images apart from others.
2. Sharp focus throughout an image is generally required in most situations. But there are times when selective focus with less depth of field is paramount. ‘Focus on the subject’ can mean select the appropriate focus so that the eye focuses its ‘attention on the subject’.
If photographing people or animals... get he eyes sharp!!
3. Composition and the ‘rules’ that govern this ( and there are many! ) is an important element in making an image successful, worthy of a lingering look. But also with or without composition, the content in the image is important. Try to have an element in the image that means something and is engaging to the viewer. Remember sometimes the 'rules' need to be broken.

Practise all your photography with these ideas in mind and your level of satisfaction with what you produce photographically will soar to new heights. You will begin to take “better pictures, more often”
Within each of these 3 points there is a wealth of information which I can expand upon in personal tuition or perhaps the ‘Getting Started in Photography’ series of 10 email sessions may be for you.... work through each instalment at your own pace all for a low $39.95.
